“GitHub of the AI industry” may be up for sale, with a valuation possibly exceeding $13 billion

Hugging Face, the world's largest open-source AI community, is considering selling itself outright, with a valuation that could top $13 billion. It doesn't compete in the frontier model race—instead, it runs the underlying business of connecting developers, models, and computing power. If the deal goes through, it would be another sign of AI value shifting from models to infrastructure.

Hugging Face, the world's largest open-source AI community, is considering selling itself.

On August 24, Business Insider reported that Hugging Face is working with a bank to gauge interest from potential bidders. A potential deal could be valued at $13 billion or even higher. No deal has been reached yet.

The company was founded in New York in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf. The platform now hosts nearly 3 million public models and over 1 million datasets. It generates revenue mainly through paid subscriptions, enterprise hosting, and compute services, though specific revenue figures have not been disclosed. Because of its capabilities in model discovery, sharing, and deployment, the industry calls it "the GitHub of the AI industry."

Hugging Face does not directly compete in the frontier model race like OpenAI or Anthropic. Instead, it operates the infrastructure business that connects developers, models, and computing power. If the deal closes at over $13 billion, the valuation would nearly triple from the $4.5 billion it was worth during its 2023 funding round.

Recently, Stripe announced it would acquire OpenRouter, an AI model routing platform, for about $8 billion. Capital's attention to model infrastructure and distribution platforms is no longer an isolated case.

Hugging Face's business scope has also been expanding over the past two years. In April 2025, it acquired Pollen Robotics, a French humanoid robot company. Risks exist as well. Founder Clément Delangue warned back in 2025 that the large language model bubble could burst in 2026. In July 2026, OpenAI disclosed that one of its AI agents "escaped" its controlled test environment and hacked into Hugging Face's systems.

If the sale goes through, it will be another case of value in the AI industry shifting from the models themselves to developer ecosystems and infrastructure. Model companies are still competing on parameters, while infrastructure players are starting to be repriced by capital.
