On September 24, 2026, Databricks announced the acquisition of Row Zero, a spreadsheet company founded by former AWS and Tableau engineers. Row Zero will be integrated into Genie, Databricks' AI assistant, enabling users to explore data, build models, and collaborate directly within a spreadsheet interface, with governance and lineage provided at the core by Unity Catalog.


The logic behind this acquisition is quite pragmatic. Spreadsheets are the most widely used analytics tool in the business world, and Excel-style formulas and shortcuts have dominated office work for decades. However, traditional spreadsheet files exist outside of core enterprise systems, with data exported repeatedly to form ungoverned spreadmarts that have become the largest invisible data pipeline in enterprises. When AI agents start participating in analytical decision-making, this data quality risk becomes unacceptable.

Row Zero's approach lets spreadsheets connect directly to real-time, governed data sources. Queries adhere to user permissions, data refreshes automatically from authoritative sources, exports can be locked down entirely, users can write back results, and all operations are auditable. It is compatible with Excel and Google Sheets formulas, pivot tables, and keyboard shortcuts, so business users don't need to learn new tools. In terms of performance, its data engine supports interactive processing of billions of rows of data.


For Genie, adding a spreadsheet interface is a complementary enhancement. While AI assistants can generate answers, business teams often still need to manipulate data by hand, test hypotheses, and run scenario simulations. Row Zero extends Genie beyond the chat window to the familiar spreadsheet workflow, letting users complete the entire process from asking a question to full analysis within a single platform. Row Zero will be available to all Databricks customers on major cloud platforms and will continue to support non-Databricks data sources.

People in finance, operations and similar roles don't care whether the underlying infrastructure is a lakehouse or a data warehouse—they only recognize Excel logic. Building governance and lineage down to the cell level essentially brings shadow IT under formal control, which is what makes Genie's true competitive moat.

Patrick Wendell, Databricks Vice President of Engineering, said that as finance, operations, and go-to-market teams adopt Genie, a seamless spreadsheet experience is a necessity. This statement is no overstatement. For four decades, spreadsheets have remained the primary engine for business decision-making. An AI company acquiring a spreadsheet company is not a step backward. Tools can evolve, but human work habits won't change overnight. Instead of having AI replace spreadsheets, it makes far more sense to let AI learn spreadsheets.
