*Halo* Has Been Decompiled by AI, Now Playable on Linux, Windows, and Android

AI has fully decompiled the Xbox version of *Halo: Combat Evolved*, and the OpenCE project has ported it to three major platforms. While players still need the original disc image for game data, the entire process is already as streamlined as an assembly line.

The Xbox version of *Halo: Combat Evolved* has been fully decompiled. Based on this decompiled code, the OpenCE project has ported the game to Linux, Windows, and Android.

"With AI, things that used to require massive workloads or were incredibly complicated are becoming possible now," wrote Bao Yu in his tweet.

The project is open source on GitHub at github.com/OpenCommunityEdition/OpenCE. It started from the decompilation branch bnunu/halo-1, which in turn originated from punpckhdq/halo. The entire port is based on Xbox build 2342, and the SHA-256 checksum is publicly available in the README.

Downloading the game is straightforward. GitHub Actions builds artifacts for every commit, and the latest version can be downloaded directly from the Releases page. The game executable does not include asset data, so you need to prepare your own Xbox disc image (.xiso or .iso). When you launch the game for the first time, just specify the path to your image, and the game will automatically extract the maps folder.

Platform support details: Linux (32-bit x86, OpenGL 4.5, SDL3), Windows (also 32-bit x86), Android (arm64, OpenGL ES 3). Online multiplayer supports up to 128 players across all three platforms—Linux, Windows, and Android players can all play together. The game works over both LAN and the internet; players can join directly via an invite link with no need to self-host a server.

The real news here isn't the game itself—it's that AI has turned this entire process into an automated workflow. Some netizens pointed out that for old code decompilation projects, the difficulty has never been the technology itself, but that no one is willing to spend months grinding through the work. AI's advantage for this kind of work isn't intelligence—it's patience: it doesn't get bored, it doesn't take days off. In the past, these projects relied entirely on enthusiast effort powered by passion; now, one person with spare time plus AI is all you need to get the job done.

Others have also reminded that while AI has made reverse engineering, porting, and symbol recovery ridiculously fast, the legality of decompilation and copyright distribution are separate issues. Leo offered a more complete perspective: one of the biggest changes AI has brought to software engineering isn't making new project development faster—it's making projects feasible that no one would touch before because the cost was too high. That said, reverse engineering is only the first step; compatibility, testing, long-term maintenance, and copyright issues still need to be addressed carefully.

Commenters have already started sharing their wishes: will we see a *Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2* project next? Can someone decompile Genshin Impact? Others asked if the game works on Mac. Suwako shared an image:

![Mac?](https://wink.run/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpbs.twimg.com%2Fmedia%2FHUFbmJobYAAPzlp%3Fformat%3Dpng%26name%3Dlarge)

Bao Yu directly replied: just fork it, have Claude code fix the compatibility issues for Mac, it'll definitely work. That's probably the confidence of the AI era.

One netizen summed it up perfectly: Innocent joy like this, there's still hope for the future. A user named Prehistoric Biosphere left just four words: This just got interesting.
