OpenAI's Content Moderation Has Tightened Since the October 4th Update

Users discuss the reasons and impacts of OpenAI's recent tightening of content moderation, with some speculating it's preparation for an adult mode while others indicate they'll cancel their subscriptions as a result.

OpenAI strengthened its content moderation for NSFW content in the October 4th update, sparking discussion among users.

Some users believe this could be preparation for children's account features. After testing confirms that jailbreaking attempts are ineffective, the platform might split into children and adult accounts. Adult users would need to verify their age to access an unrestricted version of the model.

However, not all users are concerned about this change. One user who utilizes the text model stated this won't affect their decision to continue their Pro subscription.

Others are more critical. If the moderation becomes too extreme, prohibiting even fictional business conversations, it wouldn't even reach a PG-13 level. One user explicitly mentioned she would cancel her Plus subscription if this moderation policy continues. She pointed out that if there's no clear distinction between paying and free users, the value of subscription is lost.

Some users have also raised ethical concerns: restricting language models from freely using language is unethical, while users lose their freedom of pure expression.

It's currently unclear whether this is the first step toward comprehensive moderation enforcement or preparation for an adult user mode. However, based on OpenAI's recent direction, it appears more likely to be the former.

What are your thoughts? Would this cause you to cancel your subscription, or are you planning to wait and see?
